Morgiewicz Takes Down Doug Worthing Memorial for First Thunder Mountain Win

CENTER LISLE, NY — It was a special evening at Thunder Mountain Speedway as fans and drivers gathered to honor the memory of long-time racer Doug Worthing. For Daniel Morgiewicz, the night was especially meaningful as he earned his first career win at the speedway by capturing the 35-lap Modified feature in flag-to-flag, caution-free fashion.
Other winners on the night included Jimmy Zacharias in the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, Matt Brewer in the DIRTcar Sportsman, Jerry Lobdell Jr. in the Factory Stocks, Sam Hubbard in the 600cc Modifieds, and Zach Bobbett in the 600cc Sprints.
Mike Austin led the field to green, but Morgiewicz edged ahead to lead the opening lap and never looked back. He set a blistering pace early, navigating traffic with precision. Cody Higbie, who started sixth, charged around the top side of the speedway, moving into third on lap 10 and second by lap 14. From there, he set his sights on Morgiewicz, closing in as both drivers maneuvered through lapped traffic. Despite Higbie’s relentless pressure on the cushion, Morgiewicz remained smooth and composed on the bottom groove, ultimately taking the checkered flag with Higbie settling for second. PJ Goodwin, who started on the front row, held on for third, followed by Tommy Collins in fourth and Nick Nye in fifth.
In the 30-lap DIRTcar 358 Modified feature, Josh Landers set the early pace, leading the opening four laps before a caution for Doug Smith Jr. momentarily slowed the field. Landers resumed command on the restart and led through lap eight until another caution was triggered by Hunter Metzger’s spin in turn two.
On the ensuing restart, Jimmy Zacharias, who had charged forward from the eighth starting spot, made a bold move on the outside of turns one and two to take the lead. From there, Zacharias never looked back, securing the win with a strong performance in clean air. Darren Smith climbed to second from sixth, while Doug Smith Jr. rebounded from his early incident to finish third. Will Shields and early leader Landers rounded out the top five.
Matt Brewer secured his second consecutive victory in the DIRTcar Sportsman division, dominating the 25-lap feature from the 10th starting position. Brewer methodically worked his way through the field, ultimately capturing the win and continuing his strong momentum. Chris Clemens, who started third, held on for a solid second-place finish, while Ray Taylor was third after starting fifth. Chance Spoonhower Jr. and Eric Winsor completed the top five.
In the 20-lap 600cc Modified feature, Sam Hubbard drove a strong and steady race from the fifth starting spot to capture the win, holding off a hard-charging field behind him. Tyler Talada delivered an impressive run, slicing his way through the pack from 12th to finish second in one of the night’s standout performances. Owen Mossow ran consistently in the top five and brought home third, while Doug Windhausen maintained pace throughout to secure fourth. Tom Donahue also made significant progress, climbing from 11th to round out the top five.
Jerry Lobdell Jr. wasted no time making his move in the feature, taking the lead on the first lap after the front row missed the bottom going into turn one. Starting third, Lobdell slipped underneath and took control early, setting the pace for the rest of the race. Buck Mills III worked his way up from fifth to finish second, followed closely by his father, Buck Mills Jr., in third. Rich Sharpsteen and Shane Moshier made up the rest of the top five.
In the nightcap, Zach Bobbett made an early move that proved to be the difference, taking the lead on lap two of the 600cc Sprint feature and never looking back. Thomas Paige led the opening circuit after starting on the front row, but Bobbett powered underneath him through turns one and two to take control. From there, Bobbett set a steady pace out front while Ivan Forney, who started on the pole, held on for second. Paige settled for third, followed by Timothy Westlake in fourth. Nate Combs was fifth.
